Wellness and Preventative Care

We recommend regular wellness exams to detect problems in their early stages when they are more likely to be treated and resolved with less expense, less difficulty and better success. With our comprehensive wellness and preventative care program we strive to help your pet maintain a high quality of life for as long as possible.

Dog and cats age six to seven years for every one of ours. Because of this rapid aging process, regular wellness and preventative care is needed to help maintain their quality of life. Early detection and prevention help us to aid our furry family members in living long and happy lives. Carrollton West Pet Hospital, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Animal Hospital Association recommend semiannual exams for all dogs and cats over one year of age. This would be equivalent to a human going to the doctor every three to four years since a lot can change in that time period.

We strive to provide you with information, services, and products to cover all aspects of your pet’s wellness and disease prevention needs. We cover a wide range of areas from nutrition, weight management, behavioral problems, heartworm prevention, parasite control, and allergies to preventive senior care and dental care.

By collecting a thorough history from you and then performing a complete physical examination, we can make appropriate recommendations on changes in diet, lifestyle, and medications to best serve your pet.

At our wellness exams we provide the following:

  • Complete physical exam to asses oral cavity, eyes, ears, skin, neurologic system, orthopedic system, heart, lungs, and abdomen for subtle signs that could indicate underlying problems.
  • Appropriate vaccinations based on your pet’s age and lifestyle to protect your family and pets from potentially fatal diseases.
  • Annual stool checks and heartworm blood tests to detect parasites that can affect both your pet and people.
  • Appropriate laboratory and diagnostic screening tests to detect conditions early before they become serious and more difficult to treat.
  • Recommend appropriate medications to prevent heartworm disease as well as intestinal and external parasites. In our area, heartworm prevention, intestinal prevention and external parasite (flea and tick) prevention are needed year-round.
  • Answer any questions or concerns you might have about your pet.

While we base our wellness guidelines on recommendations from the AVMA and AHAA, we will individualize your pet’s health care as appropriate to their needs and lifestyle. Through regular exams and interactions with you, we aim to build a relationship with both you and your pet to provide a comprehensive wellness care plan. As time progresses and new challenges arise, we will be here to provide advice, guidance, and medical care as needed.

Should life enable you to travel with your pet we can help make that an enjoyable experience for all involved.
